The potential of archives in dealing with the past in Zimbabwe

Assessment mission to Zimbabwe, 27 February – 4 March 2014

Elisabeth Baumgartner, Co-head, and Rahel von Arx, Program Officer working for the Dealing with the Past Program at swisspeace conducted a scoping mission to Zimbabwe on 27 February to 4 March 2017 upon request of the Human Security Division of the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs. swisspeace made a needs assessment and discussed the role and potential of documentation and archives in a dealing with the past process in Zimbabwe with civil society and other key actors.

Jointly with FDFA’s Human Security Advisor, Elisabeth and Rahel met with a number of organizations and held two reflection meetings on the topic of “Archives, Peace and Reconciliation” with civil society in Bulawayo and in Harare. Catherine Kennedy, independent consultant and former director of the NGO ‘South African History Archives’ joined both meetings as expert.
